Illusions perdues

A poetic appendix to the novel Illusions perdues by Honoré de Balzac.

Lucien Chardon
Bel homme garçon

Prey to an ambition
Nourished by illusion

Sought the company
Of High Society

But gained no ground
Lacking in background

As he lived off the funds
Of cherished loved ones

Condemned to misery...
The fate of so many

Suffering the injustice
Of that brutal artifice:

Monetary currency!
For economic scarcity

Serves ever to control
Your and my small role

In the absent Heaven:
The Comédie humaine!
